8th Graders and Their Shadows
8th Grade Adventure
by Caroline Hild
BIESZCZADY - On September 1st, the 8th graders took a trip to Bieszczady to September 4th. Then, on September the 5th, we went to Krakow, and we stayed there for one night. We thought it would be interesting to make a survey and find out what the 8th graders thought about the trip. So, our first question was whether the kids like the trains groups going from Warsaw to Bieszczady. 28 people liked the train groups. 23 people did not appreciate their train groups, because some people wanted to have their best friends with them, and some people wanted girls and boys mixed together. Our second question was whether they liked the train groups back, because we had different train groups. 22 students answered yes. 29 students answered no.
Our third question was whether the kids enjoyed the time with their roommates in Krakow, and in Bieszczady. In Krakow, the majority of students enjoyed their time with their roommates. They had fun and they talked a lot with their roommates and got to know them quite well. In Bieszczady, again majority of the students enjoyed their time with their roommates.
Our fourth question was: Did you think the photo contest was a good idea? Again, a lot of students liked the idea, and would want the teachers to do it next year.
Our fifth question was what was the best part of the trip? 16 students out of 46 thought that the best part of the trip was the hike. The hike was actually the best part, because students felt proud of their accomplishment. The hike was very hard, and there was a lot of teamwork involved. Students were encouraging one another to keep up and supported each other.

A Photo from the Photo Contest Taken by D. Lapinska

On the Train
In 2nd place tied,
we have the free time and the bonfire. During our free time, we got to shop and
talk with our friends. It was a good part because we got to know people that we
didn’t really know. On our bonfire, we had some pierogi, some salads, and some
marshmallows.
We also told scary stories, and Mr. Yuen’s was probably the best.
In 3rd place quadrupled was, the bus rides, the salt mines, the
photo contest, and the dinner in Krakow. The dinner in Krakow was French fries,
fried meat, and celery salad. Again, every year the dinner changes. So next
year 8th graders, don’t expect this. The salt mines were really cool, and
you got to lick the walls for the people that didn’t know. The photo contest will be explained in another section.
For the
seventh question, we asked what the students would change about the trip. In 1st
place with 29 votes was the free time. This probably won’t happen, because on
the trip, we have a very tight schedule. (Continued on page 44.)

The 8th Grade Adventure
By Camille Accolas
The eighth grade trip started off on Monday 1st of September, at 06:30
behind the LIM centre. Tired faces, but still lots of excitement going
on. At 07:00 the big group of 69 students started moving towards the
train station. Everyone was lined up into their train groups.
Everything looked perfectly organized, and we waited. The train arrived
and everyone got on. After a 7 hour train ride, we stopped at a small
town called Przemysl, the second oldest town in Poland, after Krakow.
Then the whole grade had a meeting before starting activities around
the town in team times. After trying to find the biggest pencil,
stenciled writing, and doing a random action of kindness, students
were free for 15 minutes. Then we hopped back onto the buses and had a
two hour ride to the hotel. By 19:00, everyone was in their rooms and
getting ready for the bonfire. At 20:00, everyone met back outside and
went to the bonfire. After eating pierogi and kielbasa, was time for
the scary stories along with marshmallows, and more then a few chills
went through the crowd. Then everyone was dismissed back to their
rooms.
The
next day started off a little slower with a wake up at 08:00 and
breakfast at 08:30. After filling the bellies and backpacks, everyone
went back to the buses and we started on our way to Sanok. The eighth
grade was then brought to the Skansen open air museum where the skits
were presented. Then we went into the open air museum and visited
rebuilt houses from the 20th century. There was also a church, goats,
and a school. Then we went back to where we had performed the skits,
had lunch and finished the skits. Then we went to the icon museum in
Beksinski. After looking at different types of icons from different
periods of time, we did some activities. Then we took the bus Rymanow
Zdroj where we had a task to prove that we were eighth graders. We had
to drink source water which tasted nasty. Then we hopped back onto the
buses, went to the hotel, had dinner, and went to bed.
The third day was the big day. We had a wake up at 7:30 with a big breakfast. Every body was anxious because it was the day of the "Big Hike". It was a big hike indeed because we got on the track at 11:00, and were back on the buses at 18:00. Seven hours of hiking with little stops every fifteen twenty minutes. It might have looked really hard, but most students got out of it, admitting that they had enjoyed it, and that they were proud of what they had just achieved as a person. The dinner room was full of excitement and happy faces, and even some hyperactivity going on.
The fourth day wasn't the most challenging because all we got to do for most of the day was relax on the bus on our way to Krakow. On the way though, we got to see some very interesting sites. The first stop was at the Krosno glass factory where we got to see hand made glass objects being made and formed with the greatest perfection. Krosno is worldwide, because we even got to see a box full of handmade glasses that were going to be imported in America. Next were the salt mines. This was very impressive because we got to see tunnels and tunnels underground were everything was either salt or rock. There was even a cathedral where everything from the floor to the walls and paintings were all made out of salt. Some people even dared to lick the walls and floors as proof. We finally arrived to our hotel "The Krakow Royal" at 20:00, had dinner a half hour later in a typical polish restaurant, where most people were glad to find more appropriate food than they had before. (Continued on page 4.)

The last day of a trip had a normal wake up at 7:30 with breakfast at 08:00 at the same restaurant we had been in the night before. The train to Warsaw was at 12:50 and lasted about two hours. Overall this was a great trip that most students enjoyed and had fun on. We hope the future eighth graders will enjoy it next year as well.

8th Grade Trip Photo Contest
By Jonna Rinne
The ASW 8th graders traveled seven hours by train to Bieszczady for their field trip. During this field trip the students were taught how to take better photos. The 8th graders had to take the best photos they could so that they could win the surprise price that the best three pictures from every category would win.

There were a couple of important rules that the 8th graders had to follow while taking a picture, or being taken a picture of. First, physical risks for self and others while taking a photo were forbidden. Also others had to be respected while taking photos and when being photographed.
The portrait is a picture of a person, usually a head shot, but not limited to the head. (Continued on page 5)

Best overall picture by Pato Lankenau
The nature photo can be any aspect of the natural world, usually without people in the picture. Macro is a close up picture of small things. For example a picture of a small flower or a bee. Architecture is any human made structure, such as a bridge, a building, a tower, etc. Still life is a picture of inanimate subject matter. Typically a small group of objects that are either human-made or “nature”. Action photos are of movement. A car driving, a bird flying, and a person running are examples of action photos. Essence of the trip - photos shows the spirit of the trip. The best mobile photo has no other criteria than being the best photo taken with a camera phone. Also the overall best photo was chosen. The prices for winning varied. The third place price was a free ice-cream ticket, and another ticket to go to class five minutes early. The second place won an extra hall pass for any class, and a pass for not having any homework. The first place winners won a free dance ticket to either of the first two dances, and a pizza party.

Picture from the 7th grade trip to Zakopane.
By: Frida Nordstrom and Caroline Jelert
September 1st through the 4th, the seventh graders went on their exciting, but tough, trip to Zakopane.
ZAKOPANE - On Monday, the seventh graders all met up a Lima Galleria, getting to know their train groups. They jumped on the train and had to stay in their cabins for the next six hours. "My train companions made the train ride seem so much shorter! With all the laughing and talking, also I got to meet new people, which I never had talked to before," says a current seventh grader, Victoria Jelert. After that they hiked up a small trail to the top of one of Tatra Mountains and took a rusty ski lift down. They woke up the next day, and they went on their first long hike, it was challenging but everyone made it to the top! "The 9km hike to Lake Morskie Oko was definitely worth it." comments a seventh grader. Once they reached their destination, they ate their lunches and enjoyed the beautiful lake view. Going down the long hike, was not a problem! Then they drove to the hotel and relaxed their sore feet and backs! After dinner they were divided into two groups. (Continued on page 7.)

Alastair and Morgan trying to get on the chair lift.
One group stayed in the castle courtyard and sketched a part of the castle, while the other group went on a tour of the castle, and saw many interesting views from the castle's top. The tour guide told them a lot of legends which were based in the castle, how the castle was built, who had lived in castle and who had suffered in the frightening dungeon.
Later, they all
gathered up and unpacked their lunches and ate them on the castle's
steps. After lunch, they walked along a huge lake and took the bus to
the center of Zakopane. Then they headed toward a museum then split up
into to groups, boys and girls. The museum was partly about the the
national park's inhabitants; like deers, bears, hares, etc. Also, there
was a part about plants, that grew in the Tatra mountains. When one
group was at the museum, the other was out walking and shopping, buying
souvenirs to take home to their families.

That night, they gathered up
with their team time groups and made up a skit, according to the the different
parts of the Janosik Legend. Also, they had an activity called "glass
painting." Some say it was pretty easy, but some got major paint
stains on themselves. After these activities, they went up to bed and
fell asleep.
Fresh and excited for the next day, the seventh graders went down to breakfast. After breakfast, they were told to pack up their belongings, for they were taking the night train back to Warsaw. But before they headed for the train, they went to a limestone cave. "It was dark, and sometimes pretty scary." comments Meilin Tan. After the tiring walk through the cave, everyone peacefully ate their snacks near a small stream. After they walked back to the bus, they went to the hotel where they ate their lunch.

MALBORK - The 6th grade went to Malbork to learn about the castle and
the times of the knights. They started the trip on September 3rd 2008. The trip to
Malbork took students three hours by train. The train cabins where divided by
genders. There were some boys that had no space on boys' cabin so they needed to
be put cabin with girls. The students played "Truth or Dare", they
socialized and worked on their Yellow Packets. When they arrived boys
got assigned their cabins and girls into their rooms in hotel Parkowy.

Teambuilding game with 6th Grade

Mr. Ptak & Mr. G Enjoying Some Ice Cream
Our newspaper did a lot of interviews regarding the trip. We
asked two teachers and four students. We found it interesting that while
questioned about the food nearly all of the kids said that pierogi weren't the
best food they ate.
They really liked visit at TGI Fridays. Students clearly
were exited because of the candy factory. During the trip 6th graders visited
Gdańsk, Malbork and Westerplatte island.
They were very interested in
Westerplatte because they looked at the giant monument of the defenders of the
island.
Apart from socializing activities on the 6th grade trip students had a chance to learn about Polish history including architecture style and great systems of heating and spying that worked in Medieval times. They went through the gorgeous old town of Gdansk and had opportunity to purchase souvenirs famous Amber jewelry.

Student council elections 2008-2009
Robert Grzesiak

Jonna Rinne - One of the Candidates for 8th Grade President

The student council still isn't so sure of this year's
plan, but Ms. Whitney, head teacher of this group of amazing students, will take care of this.
The
things Ms.Whitney wants to add this year are teacher breakfast
meetings. Teachers will meet before school and talk about their plans
for the day or about some big event. This will be like Professorial
Development days, but shorter and before school. This year we will have
more fund raising activities. More fund raising means more events, but
Ms.Whitney doesn't know what the middle school will collect money for
yet.
There is a new idea of an environmental cause. The seventh grade is already starting to collect and abandon plastic bottles. The
teachers won't tolerate plastic bottles in class in
about a month, unless the student picks one bottle and refills it after
drinking the water.
Every class should have a recycling bin, as big as the trash can, so we can recycle more paper and the last of plastic bottles.
These are more than just simple elections. The students take this really seriously. The members of the student council don't vote for their own grade candidate, this is a serious voting and all of the members vote for who they think will be this year's best president. The sixth grade cannot have a candidate for the president, but even despite that, there are a lot of them in student council. The student's will pick their president at the 25th of September. They will go outside Warsaw for a short trip, for one night, doing various activities and voting for president, vice president etc. The sixth graders can only be secretary and vice treasurer, but the seventh and eighth students will also candidate for all the other stations.

Rae Utterback - Another Candidate for 8th Grade President

Ms. Shier, Middle School counselor
New Teachers at ASW
By Ha Un Kim & Suzie Tkaczow
Eight new teachers came to ASW middle school this year! The new
middle school teachers are Mr. Hamlin (7th LA/SS, 7th & 8th PE), Ms.
Jaroslawka-Luft (French), Mrs. Kaszuba (7th Science), Mr. Murphy (6th Math, 6th
PE), Ms. Nail (6th Resource), Ms. Pietrosanti (MS/HS/ES Band), Mrs. Schlageter
(MS Electives/HS English) and Mr. Stein (7th LA/SS, Health, Elective). The
Papercut interviewed five new teachers in middle school, including the counselor.
We had five questions for them; 1. How is it like to be in ASW? 2. Where did
you teach before you came to ASW (Poland)? 3. Why did you decide to teach the
subject that you teach? 4. What is the difference between the school you taught
before and ASW? 5. Why did you decide to come to Poland?

Ms. Kaszuba, 7th grade science teacher
Ms. Kaszuba, the 7th grade
science teacher, loves being in ASW, and she taught 8th graders in Sedgefield
Middle School, North Carolina. She decided to teach Science, because she loved
it since she was a kid. The Sedgefield Middle School had more students, but fewer
resources, like laptops. She came to Poland, because she wanted to find more
about her family history, since her grandparents were Polish.
Ms. Jaroslawska-Luft
teaches MS/HS French and is new to middle school but not ASW. Before she came
to ASW she taught French at the British School. Her profession had to involve
French because she studied French for a long time, and she wanted to do
something related to it. The difference between HS and MS is that the kids are
younger and you can't be too strict and have to have a different approach.

Ms. Schlageter teaches the MS Newspaper and HS English. She thinks it is wonderful to be in our school. Before coming to ASW , she taught at the New York High School of Art & Design, and she decided to be an English teacher, because she loves reading and writing. Also, she came to Poland because her husband (Mr. Graham) decided to be a teacher at ASW.
The Papercut welcomes you all and wishes you a happy school year.
Students and Teachers New to ASW
Another lively school year has begun at the American School of Warsaw. We have already seen lots of new faces around the school in the last couple of weeks.
32 girls and boys have traveled from around the world to join our Middle School community for the next school year, into grade 6,7 and 8 . All of the new kids, including me, feel that we received a very warm welcome. We thank the teachers and students, who have helped to guide us through the first school days, by helping us with the lockers and by directing us to our next classes.
Ms.
Shier,the new Middle School Counselor,
organized an ice cream
meeting, in which she tried to get to know the new students better.
we
discussed about feelings and thoughts on Warsaw and ASW, how we
settled, what we think about the new school and the differences between
this school and our previous ones. The feedback from all of us was
very positive.
Now, as the first couple of weeks have past, most of
us have found friends and are settled in the school community, thanks
for your help!
Over the
last couple of weeks, you might have also discovered some of the new teachers
that will teach us “The Middle School” for the next school year/s.
Some of them have just recently come to Warsaw, ASW. Others have been here for previous years and have just been introduced to the Middle School. They are: Eric Hamlin (7th LA/SS/7th & 8th PE), Michelle Kaszuba (7th Science/Electives), Francis Murphy (6th Math, 6th PE), Emily Nail (6th Resources), Jessica Pietrosanti, David Stein (7th LA,SS,Health,Electives ) and Brooke Schlageter(Electives) who has helped us making this Middle School newspaper “The Paper Cut.”
I hope you have been able to meet some of the new teachers and students throughout the last couple of weeks. I wish you all a good upcoming school year!

I don’t have one.
Who is your favorite teacher?
I don’t have one either.
Mr. Stein
Where did you work before coming to ASW?
I worked at the Middle Miller Greek in northern California.
Would you say ASW is similar to the school you were at before?
No, because my previous school is not an international school, but both have a lot of technology great drama, library and music. So in some ways they are similar.
How do you like ASW?
Love it!
How do you like living in Warsaw? Is it different than The States?
It’s different compared to where I come from, because I used to live in country side. Warsaw is a city, it’s quite a change, but I like both.
How do you like the students?
The students here are all very interesting. They are all multi-talented and very diverse.
What subjects do you teach?
I teach
Language Arts, Social Studies, Health and Electives.

Ms. Kazuba
Where did you work before you came to ASW?
I worked as a Science Teacher in a school in the U.S.

Again it’s great!
How do you like the students?
The students are great; they all show a lot of interest.
What subjects do you teach?
Science and Electives
Did you teach the same subject in your old school, as you teach now?
No, I also teach Science, but I used to teach 8th grade now I am teaching the 7th grade and electives in addition.
Mr. Gerlicz
Where did you work before you came to ASW?
I started a school on my own in Santa Fee (New Mexico) in 1999; I have been working for the school since then.
Would you say ASW is similar to the school you were at before?
No, actually they are very different. The school in Santa Fe was not international, although we had sister school relattionship with France, Cuba, Japan and Mexico.
How do you like ASW?
ASW is a wonderful place to be. I enjoy working here a lot.
How do you like living in Warsaw? Is it a lot different compared to New Mexico?
I like living in Warsaw, although I have to admit that I haven’t seen a lot of the city. It is very different compared to New Mexico. In New Mexico you have more deserts, mountains, forests and it is really dry, the Native American culture is also really rich over there. Here in Warsaw the land is very flat and the cities are very urbanized.
How do you like the students?
I am trying to get to know a lot of them, but the ones I have met were really nice.
Do you have plans to change something in ASW?
I have a lot of changes planned like: education for sustainability, leadership education, creating leaders for the future, trips and to make the best school in the world.
What are the strengths and weaknesses of the school in your opinion?
I think that the school has got a good community and some great teachers; I also believe that the students' social and academic expectations are at a very high level.
But I think that there are also thing the school can still improve on. One of them is the students’ involvements.

POLAND, ASW- Have you noticed anything different about our cafeteria? Just as every other year, the ASW cafeteria system has changed. From Eurest to CPS, the cafeteria system has altered to a more modern one. To know more about the new system, Jarek Bogucki-the person in charge of the cafeteria system- was found and asked to give us some information.

Alastair Moock
By YeEun Lee
ASW - Alastair Moock will be performing
for the ASW community on the 24th of September at 18:30 at the ASW theater. The
performer is a great folk singer and guitarist who has won many awards at several festivals and
performed on the best stages. Alastair Moock is a legend, so watch him perform for
free when you have the chance, and don’t regret it later.
Alastair Moock is a folk singer and
songwriter known for his gruff voice, thoughtful lyrics, and his fingerpicking
guitar style. He likes to stick to simpler harmonic forms and tight rhyming
patterns. He first began performing in 1995 in Boston, Massachusetts. He
started by improving his skills from performing on open mike stages and worked
his way up.
By 2002, he had already been around the East and Midwest,
performing in top listening rooms and outdoor events. They include Newport,
Boston Folk Festivals, The Old Town School of Folk Music, The Birchmere, and
the Bluebird Cafe. Alastair Moock's first trip to Europe was 2003. He has made
numerous trips to Europe ever since. His songs won him several awards at the
country's most important concerts. In 2007, the same year that Alastair Moock's
fifth album came out, he was nominated for a Boston Music Award for Outstanding
Singer/Songwriter of the Year. At the moment, Alastair Moock is very involved
with caring for his twin girls, Elsa and Clio, and tours less frequently,
though he still writes and performs regularly.
Alastair Moock is performing at ASW and for
free, so why not attend the concert? With all the awards and compliments he has
received and still is receiving, I doubt the concert won’t be enjoyable. Don’t
forget, it’s Wednesday, September 24.

Middle school play auditions spark tensions
By Aleksander Maroszek
ASW AMERICAN SCHOOL OF WARSAW-The middle school play auditions will be held this November, and may possibly stress out the directors. “The play was pretty stressful because of all the forgetting lines.” Says 7th grade mathematics teacher Mrs. Craig. Although there are no plays this month, the auditions will give the middle school students something to be nervous about. Also in November, there is going to be an open meeting which will allow the students decide on what the play is going to be about. “I would like to see what creative ideas the students could come up with.” answers Mrs. Brown when interviewed. With months ahead to spare, there will probably be a lot of ideas for the play. “The auditions will be held at least before the Christmas Holiday.” Promises Mrs. Brown. With all of the planning and pressure, middle school students have a vast competition to beat so they will have to fight for their roles.

ASW's track.
"I think we have a great chance of doing well in the tournament because we have a great squad with lots of talent," was what all of the coaches said about their teams. According to Mark Gaspersich (cross country coach), the team is a hard-working, happy, confident and well-balanced squad. Picking the team is easy for Mr. G because there are six boys and six girls to choose from.

Boys' (or girls') soccer ball.
Mr.G. says that his main goal is for everybody is to enjoy running. "I think some people are suffering more than others but they all have got a smile on their face," was Mr. G's last comment. The cross country team is confident that they will do well in the tournament, but may not be as confident as last year with their two star runners gone: Adam Bosrey who is now in high school, and Morgan Mitchell who can't make the tournament for safety reasons.
Next up is the boys' soccer where we talked to Mr O'Sullivan and Mr Graham about how
they think the season is going. This year over fifty boys put their
names down for boys' soccer but only 15 boys can make it to the
tournament. We asked the boys' soccer coaches (Mr O'Sullivan and Mr
Graham) how think the team is coming on at the beginning of the
season.

Racket: used frequently by the tennis team.
They both said there is a good attitude and everybody pays attention to how they want them to play. (Although listening to both the interviews it seems they could be pushing the players a bit harder.) The tournament at the end of the season is obviously a very exciting moment in the players' minds. But how are the coaches feeling about it? " I think we'll try our best." were the words that came out of Coach Graham's mouth but Coach O'Sullivan thought it was too early to say.
Mr. Sidaway (tennis coach) says that his squad is hard-working, well-balanced, confident, and difficult to choose from. "It's always difficult to choose the team because there are so many good players out there to choose from," is what Mr. Sidaway told us.

ASW - Oh the lovely months of autumn, a time when the leaves fall, the sun is supposed to shine, and it gets much cooler. Throw in some cleats, a uniform, shin guards and some mud into the mix. A perfect way to spend a September afternoon. All this might sound bizarre but that’s what we, the Middle School girls' soccer team, love to do. Play soccer, that is.
Every Tuesday and Thursday at 4:15, all of the willing middle school girls gather outside on our soccer field to practice. The weather never really bothers us, because we know that in less than a month the final 15 girls will be headed to Prague. We practice for about an hour and a half, which doesn’t seem to be enough. One of the coaches, Ms. Schlageter, said that "a little more practice time would be good". The other coach Ms. Magda agrees, adding that "all the extra practice time is necessary, especially game time so that the girls can get a feel of the field and their positions." Therefore, the coaches encourage showing up as early as we possibly can.
Our practices consist of a lot of
different exercises and stretches. Heel
kicks, jogging from cone to cone, pull backs, and “pick up grass” are
just
a few of the exercises we do at the beginning of practice.
There is A
LOT of running involved, from laps to running over to the other field
to get extra soccer balls from the boys. Basically all the time you
have to keep moving, from the beginning to the end of practice. For the
first 40 minutes we warm up and practice basic skills, then for the
rest of the time we scrimmage or do some new drills.
This year there are about 7 sixth graders, 11 seventh graders and 9
eighth graders. Last year the sixth and eighth graders dominated with the
number of people trying out, but only one 6th grader made the "A" team.
The day that all of the thirty-two girls trying out for the team are
waiting for one day, September 19. That day will be Friday, even though
we don't have practice. We will be playing the Junior Varsity girls'
soccer team and even though only ten people will be on the field,
everyone who is trying out needs to come.
Remember to support your girls' soccer team on October 9-12.

ASW girls at last year's CEESA tournament.
2008 Sports Tournaments
ASW - All the tournaments are
from the 10th to the 13th of October.
Everyone likes playing on their teams and are very optimistic about winning the
tournaments in 2008. The soccer teams, both girls' and boys,' are sure they're playing well and are able to win the Soccer Cup. They enjoy tournaments here in
Warsaw. On the tennis team, girls think they can play on their team and like
the training with friends. When i asked "Do you think you can win the tournament?" I got
the answer "No". But they do like playing on the team. For cross
country running (I am on the team), we have some amazing runners - most of them
in sixth grade. It looks like we are surely going to win in Albania and get a
new trophy! Everyone likes running for pure nature
seeing - trees, forests and some nice tracks to run, but mostly the trees. Most
of the runners already have improved their running and they are much faster
than last year.
All teams are having fun and finding new friends. For the soccer
tournament (it is here), there are lots of players to host, so if any one
wants to host a player, you can sign up for it in the activities office.

ASW going to Win the CEESA Tournament
By Kosei Iwasaki
This season, in middle school, there are three different sports: soccer, tennis and cross-country. This year, ASW is hosting boys' soccer, and will play against five other schools, which are Moscow, Budapest, Bucharest, Prague, and Istanbul. There are more than 40 players that try for boys' soccer, and only 15 of the 40 are going to compete with the other schools as a team. According to coach Graham, the players can do their best which will let the team win the tournament, the boys soccer will play against Kosa, which is very good team. Girl's soccer are going to Prague. Soccer is also popular for girls, about 40 people signed up. Coach Schlageter is very excited about going to Prague. Mrs. Schlageter's highest goal is not winning, but having fun and working as hard as they can. On September 18th, the girls' soccer team went to the British School to play against them. The score was 4-0 for ASW. This year, boys' tennis team is going to Tallinn, Estonia. Tennis is not as popular as soccer, however there are still more than 20 people who signed up and 7 players are going to Tallinn. Coach Sidaway is always positive and and has chosen to win the tournament. His goals are to go through the tournament, for his players to develop skills, have fun, and enjoy the games. Tennis girl's are going to Riga, Latvia, and about 20 people signed up.

On Friday September 07 2008, In Belgium 20 competitors were racing in the track of SPA.
First on
the finish line was Lewis Hamilton, but after the race Hamilton was
demoted to
the first race and Massa was upgraded to first place. Hamilton was
demoted, because
he overtook Kimi Raikonen cutting the track and driving on the grass.
Hamilton
said that he had no choice, to avoid collision. Robert Kubica could be
third , but the accident in the pit stop dropped his position to
sixth.
2. Nick Heidfiled-BMW
3. Lewis Hamilton-McLaren
4. Fernando Alsonso-Renault
5. Sebastian Vettel-Toro Rosso
6. Robert Kubica-BMW
7. sebastien Bourdais-Toro Rosso
8. Mark Webber -Red Bull
On Friday 14th of September 2008 there was a new race GP of Italy, last race in Europe this season. The race won Vettel.
It was a
great race, because it was raining and foggy first time in 34 years, so racers
couldn’t see as much as normally. However some people didn’t have as good cars
as the others, because they were guessing that it’s not going to be raining, so
there cars were made for a sunny weather, however racers still did their best
and Kubica over took 8 people and he finished his race on the 3rd
position, but he started on 11th.
Second was Kovalainen. Kubica says he wants to win the Champions ship
or at least try to win it, but he needs to hurry up, because there are
4 races left.
In our school i asked 15 people if the like Formula one and 9of the said no and only 6 said yes i do. However two of the people that said yes said that their favorite racer was Kubica one person said it was Massa and one Webber. One person said that he liked the old racer Senna one person didn't like anyone.

REVIEW of THE DARK KNIGHT
By Jeremy Kim
GOTHAM CITY- The Dark Knight, released August eighth, got a 9.1 rating from ‘IMDb.com’, was the sequel of Batman Begins. It was an excellent movie in my opinion with outstanding performances by all the actors. The film was based on the classic Batman that included The Joker. But The Joker was much more of a greater fear in the newer Batman and much more serious than a jokester.
The acting by Heath Ledger as the Joker was very impressive; Heath Ledger is known as a “method actor” who, while in production of a film, acts like their character in order to make the performance better. Christian Bale who played the role of the Batman himself did an even better job than he did in the previous Batman, was more serious and overall acted better. Aaron Eckhart who played Harvey Dent, Gotham City’s top rated Lawyer who is hated by the local villain’s gang. As well as Harvey Dent, the other top lawyer is Rachel Dawes (Maggie Gyllenhaal) who is involved with Harvey Dent. Lucius Fox is Bruce Wayne’s (Batman) equipment supplier; Batman is armed with bullet proof Kevlar and the most lethal weapons. Lieutenant Gordon is a close friend of Batman and always helps him no matter what the situation is.

The Batman Symbol (Taken from Google Images)
The movie was a very creative and action packed one and was an incredible production by Christopher Nolan. The Dark Knight was rated 3rd out of 250 movies throughout history on ‘IMDb.com’ and 4 out of 4 stars from ‘rogerebert.suntimes.com’, a movie review site. The truth on the film is that it was made before the death of Heath Ledger and wasn’t released earlier because of the death of Heath Ledger. There is a lot of talk going on about the fact if Heath Ledger Should be the winner of the Oscar due to his outstanding acting for the Dark Knight. Heath Ledger was a very strong actor and won many other movie awards and this could be his first Oscar.
"Sweeeeet" Tanay Bojwani 7
Q:
Would you see the Dark Knight again if you had a chance?
Tanay: Yes definitely
"Full of action!" Alastair Abrahan 7
Q: Do you think there could be change to the film?
Alastair: No, nothing

On
the 29th of August, Mamma Mia came out. It is about a girl who is
going to have a wedding and wants three of her possible fathers to walk
her down the aisle. Not telling her mother, she invites them all to her
home and her mother's hotel so she can figure out
which one is her father.
Many people have already watched it but some might be cautious about going,
Or some go but don't understand it. When I asked an eight-year-old, she said that she didn't really
understand it. But when I asked a ten-year-old she understood it well.
After interviewing couple of Middle Schoolers about what age should
people start watching it, all of their answers pointed to ten.
Not only for understanding reasons, but as well for maybe some
inappropriate scenes. There were many different answers for
what were the students' favorite parts. 6th and 8th graders mentioned
that they liked the musical parts. The 7th graders said that they liked
the mom's crazy personality.
Mamma Mia's soundtrack was full of ABBA hits. Even the title came from one of the songs performed
by the band. At first, the performance was a play but after becoming
so famous around the world producers thought that it would be a great
idea if they would make it a movie to get the big bucks.
Many
people said they would give the movie about four stars when I asked how
many stars would they give the movie. They said
it was because some of them said that they saw it already as a play or
that Pierce Brosnan can't sing or even that is was a bit silly
sometimes.

Mr. Celinski is the teacher of the Middle School Rock Band Class and here he is playing an acoustic guitar.
By: Stephanie Runner
(ASW) middle school rock band is a class where kids like you use their talents to create music. Mr. Celinkski, who teaches this class is sometimes a guest in the show, helping to fill in for students that either could not come or were sick. The Paper Cut was lucky enough to get an interview with one band member from "Amplified Sounds", an 8th grade band, and as a special interviewee, an audience member from one of the past concerts; Samantha Strubel. I asked Samantha what she thought about the past concerts; she responded, having to think for a minute, “I thought they were…..were very good, I especially liked the guitarist and the singing.” Although she could not remember the name of the band she backed up her answer by saying that all the bands were good. Then I asked her if she would like to see a specific song played in the near future. She replied and recited some of her favorite verses from the song, “Wouldn’t It Be Nice" by the Beach Boys. There are three middle school bands. These bands practiced day and night to learn these songs. With two bands during school hours and one band before school, the whole school will get to see a great show on the 20th of September. (Continued on page 44.)

Music & Books
By Rae Utterback
Our school holds 220 middle school students. I interviewed 50 students and asked what genre they liked to listen to. Not surprisingly Hip Hop and Pop music came out as the most frequent choice. Rather shockingly, rock music came in second place.
Genres:
·
Classic (Baroque, impressionist, modern, etc.) - 2 people
·
Rap - 4 people
·
Hip Hop, Pop – 21 people
·
Rock (Classic rock, rock, alternative rock) – 12 people
·
Punk – 1 person
·
Grunge – 1 person
·
Easy Listening – 3 people
· Blues/Jazz/Soul – 1 person
·
Metal – 4 people
·
Country – no people
· Techno – 1 person
Our
visiting author; Chris Crutcher's books have been widely read
throughout the middle school students and teachers. The eighth graders
will be reading his book Whale Talk this year in Language Arts
class. You will be able to find most of Chris Crutcher's books in the
school library. Chris Crutcher's books often circulate around sports,
so if you are a jock then these may be just the books for you.

POLAND- On Wednesday 21st August Snoop Dogg came to Poland. He sang on a concert in Torwar in Warsaw. The concert was supposed to start at 20:00, but it started after ten. The Snoopadelics were crazy. One of them took off his shirt and threw it at the crowd. Snoop Dogg was amazing. He stopped the whole concert just to start another song. His songs and dancers were fantastic.
Sarah Alkan: "I didn't dislike anything about the concert. I loved every song."

Battlefield:Bad Company
“Wars are fought for many different reasons, and sometimes, when they
don’t give you good ones, you have to make up one of your own.”
-Preston Marlowe, Bad Company
As soon as I put the game into my gamestation I knew that it was the kind of game that is going
to be a classic. The graphics of this game are outstanding and the fact
that you can destroy 95% of the surrounding area is amazing. Plus the
fact that that this game is just really well done , the characters are funny and the game just flows. Also, of course the game is not perfect. There are some things that just get you mad, for example, the producers did not get a lot of licenses for guns and the guns have either weird names or look weird.
There might be some other bad parts to the game but there is no point
of looking for them because they will be so small bad things that it is
not worth it.My opinion about the game is that it is almost perfect and
the producers did a great job.
The
basic idea of this game is that you end up in "The bad company", and
the people that are in the company either did something they were not
supposed to or wanted to be here because they serve for less. You fight in Russia and a made up country called Serkozache. It never really tells you why the character you play with, Preston Marlowe, ended up in this company, but you get to know why your companions are in it. So there is this guy named Sweetwater, who
ended up in this company because he may have hacked into the army
computer and put a virus on the army software. Another guy named Haggard, who loves explosions, and may have blown something up that was not supposed to be blown up. Finally, your boss, Sargent Redford, who is in here because he wants to go home quicker. It is a risk because the death rate in B company is much greater then in the normal army since the B company is sent to the worst missions and the most dangerous ones. So after you meet your companions, you go to a few missions, when at one mission a bar of gold is found by Haggard in one of your enemies pockets and after that the game totally changes. Now, instead of working for the army, you run after trucks filled with gold even in countries you are in peace with. During this crazy time, the army turns against you and they call you dead. In
your adventures you meet a weird president of the made up country that
helps you by giving you a helicopter to run away from the country. You
also drive motorboats and drive motorboats and my favorite, you get to
drive a golf cart. Driving this thing is funner then driving a tank. Every shot means death to you, but it's just so fun to drive a golf cart when you got bullets flying around and tanks shooting at you. I am not going to tell any more because you should find out yourself. I say buy this game and may dynamite be your friend. I give this game a 9 and a half out of 10.
I interviewed Jeremy Kim, who has also played this game and I think that he even exagurated on describing how good the game was. I asked him if the game has any weaknesses and he said no. He said that the game just flows and playing the game is really fun. He said that he wouldn't change anything in the game.

ASW--This school year, ASW had presented many
privileges for both students and teachers, and one of them are the new
computer tablets. The tablet is manufactured by Dell and is called the
Latitude XT. Unfortunately for us middle school students, only the 9th
and 10th graders plus the teachers were given the opportunity of having
the $2,200 tablets.
In my interview with Mrs. Schlageter, she said that the tablet is
great. She was amazed with its cool features like the rotating lid
and the touch screen. The tablet helps her in taking notes, correcting
tests and giving comments to student's papers. She also uses her tablet
in making lesson plans and grading. For her, though the tablet is quite
confusing, its capabilities are amazing.
I think that ASW made the right decision in just distributing the tablets to 9th and 10th graders and teachers. We middle school students aren't yet ready to take the responsibly of being a tablet user and aren't old enough to wield a $2200 piece of technology.

ASW - Just a few weeks ago Apple released a new range of iPods: the new Nano, Classic and Touch. For this edition of the The Paper Cut, I have decided to write a review of the new iPod Nano and iPod Touch to give a clear picture of them.
iPod Nano 4G
Pros:
The new Nano has the old candy bar shape back and a larger screen than the old candy bar Nanos. It is available with either 8 gigabytes or 16. The screen is the same shape and size as the old iPod Nano 3G, but has been flipped 90 degrees into a vertical position. It also has a curved glass screen cover that is a bit more fingerprint and glare attractive than it's predecessor's but is more durable due to its curve and thickness. It now has an accelerometer built in which makes looking at photos, flicking through Coverflow and playing games more comfortable, just like on the iPhone or iTouch. A cool new feature they added in every new iPod and iTunes is the Genius Play list feature. While listening to a song, you select the Genius button and iTunes or your iPod puts together a playlist with similar songs from your library. When using iTunes or an iPod Touch with wifi, it will additionally recommend songs from the iTunes Store. It comes in nine colors for the 16 gig and the 8 gig. This time it is different from all the previous Nano generations which only had the option of a silver or white body for the lowest-capacity iPod Nano. Another thing they added is the "Shake to Shuffle" feature. When listening to a song you just shake the Nano and it shuffles to another song in the playlist. The battery life has been improved to 24 hours of audio playback and 4 hours of video playback. The iPod Nano is extremely slim and fits in any pocket as if it were no more than a pack of gum or a candy bar.
Cons:
The iPod Nano feels, due to it's extremely slim shape,
like a blunt knife in the hand. It isn't that easy to grip or keep hold
of and is easy to loose because of it's size. Another down point is that
when using the "Shake to Shuffle" feature, you have to shake it pretty
violently to make it work. This is useful for when running with it or
driving on a bumpy road but its prone to attracting people's attention
when you randomly start to wildly shake your iPod. It also isn't an
original concept from Apple, we've seen this on the current Sony
Walkman.
All in all, the new iPod Nano 4th generation is a
really nice piece of technology which is better than all of its
predecessors put together.
iPod Touch 2G
Pros:
The
new iPod Touch has been improved in many ways from the old iPod Touch
first generation. It has a thinner and sleeker design and is very
similar to the iPhone 3G. It has a curved stainless steel back and rim
and it is thinner and lighter than the old iTouch. One of the greatest
improvements Apple made, is the built in speaker and volume control
buttons on the side. These two things were what most iTouch users
missed the most so Apple decided to fulfill their wishes. There is only
one speaker for casual listening, not for high end audio
playback. The speaker also works great for applications and games. This
iPod also has the Genius feature just like the iPod Nano 4G. (Continued on page 33)

I POD

I POD
For users looking for a normal music player it might be quite overwhelming and for lots of people its confusing to use. The audio quality is average and isn't good enough for super quality audio freaks. The iTouch, like any other iPod, needs iTunes to be synced with a computer. This new device is pretty bulky and takes up the whole average pocket. It doesn't have bluetooth which many people including me find disappointing because it can be used to swap music between phones and other bluetooth- enabled music players. Apple, of course, does not want to support this. I would definitely use it for that. Another down side is that it is very hard to load movies that you haven't purchased from the iTunes store onto your iPod.

Facebook home page
Facebook, a blog for teenagers/younger adults, allows you to connect
with your friends, family, and long lost friends. The portal opened
February 4, 2004, first started just for Harvard College students. In June 2004 Facebook was open to almost any college in the U.S.A. and Canada.
Since September 26, 2006, anyone in the whole world can join Facebook,
the only requirements are to be over thirteen years old and have a valid email address. Facebook's value is about 8
billion dollars.
A lot of the students in the ASW have Facebook.
Dennis Grutz has had Facebook for only 4 weeks, he said he only made a
account because it became so popular and everyone is talking about it in
school so he just wants to see how it is. Paul Kohlhaussen has Facebook. He owns his own account. Paul said that he is
really disappointed that Facebook has changed its layout at the beginning
of September. "A lot of people do not like the new Facebook layout," said
Paul, "there are a lot of groups that protest against the new layout and
want the old one back." Paul explained that he does add the
applications but does not use them because they are mostly just
annoying; some are good but just a few.
Ms. Schlageter has had Facebook for one year. "I don't usually add students because its private." said
Ms. Schlageter. Mr. Graham said the exactly same quotation. Ms.
Schlageter said that she doesn't add the applications because it
sometimes seems like they could be viruses. "I do stay active online
chatting with friends but mostly they are friends from overseas so we aren't
online at the same time.
In conclusion, you can see that Facebook is really popular between teenagers and adults.

ASW -There’s no one on earth that has not heard about the iPhone 3G. It is said is that the iPhone 3G can do anything. But is that really true? After some research I found some very interesting facts about the amazing iPhone 3G.The main feature about this gadget is that it’s both phone and music player. People say this is one of the best things about iPhone 3G. The term 3G stands for third-generation mobile technology. It’s a wide-area wireless technology that permits a much faster data transmission. Its battery can last for 7 hours of video and 24 of audio. These aren’t the only things that are new about the iPhone 3G. Its design has changed a since the last version of the iPhone. Unfortunately, it's still very attracted to smudges and fingerprints. In fact the back of the device has lost its stylish aluminum in favor of black or white.

iPhone 3G

iPhone 3G comes in different colors!
All that has been
said is good, but I found some things that the iPhone 3G cannot do or
under performs when compared to competitor devices. For example, it
does not support
MMS (multimedia messages), a common feature to most mobile phones on
the
market, the built-in photo camera has a limit of 2 mega pixels and no
front-facing camera.
After interviewing some of the school staff
and teachers I got aware of their opinion.
Mrs.
Schlageter: “A cool and expensive and probably unnecessary item.”
Ms Kasia: “It’s just a gadget with many functions and a great thing
for those who like it.”
Mr. Kuhn's: “I like
what it can do, but I would never buy one because, of the 2 year service
contract.”
Its price starts at $199 or 470pln. &

Things to do on weekends
by Asia
3. Read or start reading a interesting book- Some people love reading but some don' t. Even though you might not like it try to find a book that really interests you. Maybe you like girly, sport, fantasy, action or other kinds of books. Make sure you don't get too bored with your book otherwise its not fun to read.
4.Visit your family .- It
is good to visit your family sometimes. Maybe you have cousins that you
don't meet so often. Maybe visit your grandma and help her with cleaning
or cooking. It is good to meet with your family often because there is
no one you can trust more then your family.
5. Do your homework or study- Sometimes it is better to do your homework on a Saturday morning because then you have the whole weekend free from doing homework. Sometimes it turns out that it is 22 o'clock on Sunday and you realize that you have to study to a math test that is tomorrow. Wowww! If you will have a test on Friday it is good to study the week before on Sunday.
6. Get a job- Your mom doesn't want to give you some money it is not a problem. Sometimes it is fun to work, like a lemonade sale or your old toys. Some girls sell their old Barbies. Not only you get rid of something but you also get money for it. But remember to not make something too price because then nobody will buy it. Maybe you get get some money from your mom if you help her to clean. (Continued on page 38.)

7. Go to the park- Everybody needs fresh air . If you sit all the day in your house you won't be very healthy. Walking or jogging 2 times a day would help your body stay fit and make you feel better. Going to the park is not only healthy, it is also fun because you can feed the squirrels and birds. Maybe you can take your dog with you.
8. Practice your talents - everyone has a talent. You have to practice or you will lose it. The more you practice you will bebetter at it.
9. Play sport- Sports are very important for use and our bodies. To stay fit and have fun you should play your favorite sport during the weekend or the week. No time is wasted when you play sports. When you are good at the sport maybe you could try to learn a new one that fascinates you.
10. Play video games- Some
people instead of going to the park rather sit down at home in their
comfortable couch and play video games. At least you learn how to play
a game. You can invite your friend other and play with them.
11. Take care of your pets- Almost
everybody has a pet. All the pets need caring and time. Maybe you can
sit and pet your cat for 30 min or walk your dog for a longer time then
usual. The pet will love you more when you will spend with it more
time.
12. Help Other people- If
you want people to say nice things about you, you should go and help
somebody sometime. Like help a lady cross the street or take a cat out of a
tree. If you help like this that means that you are a good person and
care for others.
13. Be creative- Some people are very creative but some are not. To be more creative you can look in internet what craft can you do. Like you can do a airplane out of a toothpaste tube. That is really creative:
1. Get out the toothpaste of the toothpaste tube.
2. Wash it inside.
3. Sharpen a sushi stick and put it through the empty tube.
4. Cut out of a cardbord paper wings and attach them to the toothpaste.
5. Make the pilot cabin out of silver paper. Cover the whole thing in colored paper so it looks nice.
6. Design it in many different styles.
14. Look at old photos- Memories
from older days are one of the best things you can remember. The photos
that you might look at in the computer or in your hand. Maybe you can
organize a family meeting and look at all the photos.

Number One Shopping Mall
By Maya Karem
Warsaw, Poland
A shopping mall is not just another place where we shop. It is a lot more, since most of us like to spend time in the shopping mall, I decided to make a survey among the middle school students on what is their favorite shopping mall. I listed nineteen shopping malls located in Warsaw.
Before I announce the most enjoyable shopping mall in Warsaw, there are the survey results for each grade’s girls and boys.
The most preferred shopping mall by the 6th grade girls is Zlote Tarasy, and the second most preferred is Galeria Mokotów. The 6th grade boy’s most much liked shopping mall is Galeria Mokotów, and their second most preferred is Blue City.
The most popular shopping mall by the 7th grade girls is Galeria Mokotów, and second popular is Zlote Tarasy. And the 7th grade guys’ well liked shopping mall is also Galeria Mokotów; however their second favorite one is Sydyba Best Mall.
Next, the 8th grade girls’ most enjoyable shopping mall is Zlote Tarasy, and their second is Galeria Mokotów. And the 8 th grade guys’ most enjoyable shopping mall is Galeria Mokotów. Their second one is the Blue City
Over all, the favorite shopping mall chosen by all of the Middle School students is Galeria Mokotów with 66 votes. And coming in second place with 48 votes is Zlote Tarasy.
Since Galeria Mokotów is the shopping mall that most Middle School students enjoy, I will inform you with some of the attractions in this shopping mall. Most students enjoy at Galeria Mokotów it just to walk around while chatting with their friends. In Galeria Mokotów you can also play bowling, billiard (pool), karaoke, and disco all in one center at Galeria Mokotów, Bowling Center. The Bowling center is also the biggest entertainment center in Warsaw. More over there are lots of restaurants that offer variety of foods, ice cream , fast food, coffee shops, asain & polish. and lets not forget the perfect entertainment for the winter days, the Cinema City. Cinema City has about 16 screens and lots of snacks to sell. So go and enjoy!

Obama Picture: http://blog.nola.com/conventions_impact/2008/08/large_Obama%20accept.jp
The U.S. Elections
Ola Vonau- WASHINGTON D.C.-The
news about the U.S. Elections 2008 have spread all over the world.
Everybody knows how important it is to have a good leader to improve a
country's economy, which is exactly what America needs at the moment.
Since many things have been going on in the USA lately, like the
building of the anti-missile shield in Eastern Europe or the wars in
Iraq and Afghanistan, as
well as
several terrorist attacks on US troops and the low dollar, America
needs someone to guide them. The citizens of the United States of
America have been given a choice. They can either vote for Barrack
Obama, a 45 year old Democrat, or John McCain, a 72 year old
Republican. Since the final election will be held on the 4th of
November, The Paper Cut supplies you with information about the elections so far.

John McCain
McCain Picture: http://www.goodtimeoldies.com/Files/john.mccain.jpg
The Republican candidates were John McCain, Mike Gravel,
Dennis Kucinich, Bill Richardson and Tom Vilsack. During the elections,
Hillary decided to support Obama in his campaign. Mrs. Clinton believes
Obama MUST and WILL become President. Her decision was based on the
idea to unite the Democratic Party. Sarah Palin, the vice-president
candidate for the Republican Party and Governor of Alaska, was a good
choice for McCain as a running partner. After Clinton fell out of the
race, McCain gained 25% of former female Clinton voters, which lowered
Obama's chances. So far, the two final candidates have about the same
chance of winning, although Obama is leading by 2%.
This week we surveyed 45 middle schoolers, 15 from each
grade. 9 out of 15 6th graders, 12 out of 15 7th graders and 9 out of
15 8th graders care and are interested in the elections. 10 6th graders
believe Obama is going to win, while the other 5 thinks it is McCain
that will get more votes. As for 7th grade, 12 people said Obama was
definitely in the lead, leaving 3 people behind McCain. 14 students
from the 8th Grade said Obama would become President, but only one
person thought differently. This survey shows that if the elections
were to be held at ASW, Obama would have a 64.2% lead. Some students
commented on the elections. One of them said that he/she hoped Obama
would win, but he/she had a feeling McCain had a larger chance. Another
said: "He will lose HAHA!!!" when referring to McCain. (Continued on pg 44.)

Around The World
Many things have been happening around the world lately. Some of them good, some quite dramatic. It is important for us to know these things therefore The Papercut supplies you with information on the current events.
Policemen Are Killed in Terrorist Attack in China (Aug. 4): Chinese officials say two members of the East Turkestan Independence Movement, a Muslim group based in western China, drove a truck into a group of police officers who were jogging, then threw explosives and stabed them. Sixteen police officers died and another 16 were wounded. The attack raises concerns about the upcoming Summer Games.
Several Lebanese Soldiers were Killed in Bombing (Aug. 13): A bomb left on the street exploded and tore through a bus carrying Lebanese troops, killing 15 people, 9 of them soldiers. No one claims responsibility for the attack, but in 2007, the army fought an al-Qaeda linked Islamist group in Tripoli.
Shiite Pilgrims Are Targeted in Several Attacks (Aug. 14-16): About two dozen worshippers are killed in three separate attacks as they make their way toward Karbala to celebrate the birthday of 9th-century imam Muhammad al-Mahdi. Iraqi officials blame al-Qaeda in Iraq for the attacks.

September 2008
- U.S. Report on Civilian Deaths in Attack on Afghans
Conflicts With Other Accounts (Sep. 2): A U.S. military report
on the number of civilian casualties incurred in an August airstrike by
U.S. troops on a village in Azizabad finds that five to seven civilians
and 30 to 35 Taliban were killed. The UN and the Afghan government,
however, say as many as 90 Afghan civilians, 60 of them children,
died.
- International Regulator Allows India to Buy Nuclear Fuel (Sep. 6): The Nuclear Suppliers Group, comprised of representatives from 45 countries, votes to allow India to buy nuclear fuel for its reactors as long as it uses the fuel for civilian purposes only. The U.S. Congress must approve the agreement. The opposition party in India, the Bharatiya Janata Party, is against the deal, calling it a "nonproliferation trap."

- Three Convicted in Plot to Blow Up Planes (Sep. 8): Three men, out of eight who were on trial, are found guilty in a British court of conspiracy to commit murder. The defendants were arrested in 2006 for trying to use liquid explosives to blow up seven planes that were traveling from the UK to the U.S. and Canada. They are acquitted of the more serious charge of preparing acts of terrorism.
- Several Bombs Tear Through Indian Capital (Sep. 13): Over the course of 25 minutes, five bombs explode in crowded markets in New Delhi, killing 22 people and injuring dozens. The Indian Mujahideen claims responsibility for the attacks.

The best places to go for vacation
WARSAW: Where are the places that most of the students
in ASW go for their vacation? The top three places are the United States
(10 people), Italy (8 people), Brussels and the Caribbean (2 people).
Monica Witkowska in 8th grade said that her favorite place to go for
vacation is Los Angeles, America and her favorite things to do there
is go to Universal Studios and ride the roller coasters and go shopping.
Universal Studios in Los Angeles was created in 1915 by Carl Laemmle
and you can see a 10m tall King Kong and the sharks from the film called
'Jaws'. You can see the skills of Fred Astaire dancing on the ceiling.
Universal Studios in Los Angeles opens at 9:00 a.m. and closes at 19:00 p.m.
If you are going with more than twenty people, you are advised to make an
arrangement by phone in advance.
Another awesome place to go for
vacation in the United States is Santa Monica, which is located in
California. Staying in Santa Monica Beach is fun too. There is 3.5
miles of broad, sandy coastline and more than 340 sunny days
each year. Sometimes the dolphins appear in the water but no sharks,
so you don't have to worry.

ASW-If you could pick one place to go on vacation what would it be? Some popular locations on 1000 Places to See Before You Die, included the Pyramids/Sphinx,the Colloseum in Rome, Venice, Machu Picchu, and Santorini, Greece. However here at ASW we had some different ideas. Some interesting destinations that our faculty said were traveling on the Trans-Siberian Railroad, climbing Mount Kilimanjaro, going to the Arctic to see Polar Bears, going to Nusa Dua beach in Bali, and diving in the Tubbataha Reef. About 65% of the middle school faculty preferred to go to a warm place for their dream vacation, while about 35 % said a cold location. Another interesting fact is that about 35% of the faculty chose to go to Asia for their dream vacation. Among those interviewed, Mr. Gerlicz wanted to go kayaking in Vancouver, Ms. Dunlap said she wanted to visit Nusa Dua beach in Bali, Ms. Di Mateo wanted to go to the Galapagos Islands, and Ms. Kisler wanted to go on safari in Africa. We noticed that none of the students that we interviewed chose a cold place for their dream vacations; all of them chose tropical locations. Some of the students' dream locations ranged from Marbella, Spain, to Hawaii, to the Maldives, to the Carribbean. So where is your next vacation going to be? Choose wisely!

So you shouldn’t really expect this, but the teachers are doing the best they can. You do get quite a lot of free time during the trip, and you have enough time to rest and socialize. In 2nd place are the train groups. Students would’ve loved to pick their own train groups. Teachers did try to make it equal, and they did do a pretty good job. You had at least one of your friends in the train. Also, teachers would maybe let you pick their train groups, but they have to build-up your trust.
Our final question whether the students enjoyed the activities. 31 students out of 49 enjoyed it. We played some games, and we visited museums. So, overall, the trip was a success. Not only did the teachers make it a success, but the students too. They chose whether the trip was going to be fun or not, and they chose to make it fun. So congratulations to every single one of you 8th graders and teachers for a successful trip!

Mr. Sidaway's main goal is to
try and improve every player's skills. "I'm working the team harder
from now on," is what he told us. But when we asked if the players met their goals, he said that he would tell us at the end of the
season.
Hendrik Hoelzer (a tennis player) says that training could be a bit more difficult and is very crowded.
"There
are a lot of good players and only seven make the team," is what Hendrik
said. When Mathew asked Hendrik if the team was meeting its goals
he said yes.
It looks like all of the boys' Middle School sports teams are doing great and are ready for the final
C.E.E.S.A. tournament: the ultimate test that athletes and coaches are
hoping to pass.

One of the band members, Rae Utterback, was willing to give us some of her time to answer a few questions. Rae Utterback, in grade 8, plays the bass and has been for 1 year. I asked her if she was at all scared when she went on stage, she answered that she never got scared going up on stage. I followed that question up with another, I asked her if she got along with her band members and if she didn’t then why? She answered strongly "I get along with them even though sometimes they frustrate me because they don't learn their notes on time." If you have not been to at least one of the Rock and Rota concerts, I highly encourage you to. You never know, you may someday see these people’s names ‘up in lights’.(Continued from pg 38)
Overall, my opinion about the
elections is pretty simple. Obama stands a good chance since he is
younger than McCain and has a more modern point of view. He also has a
better chance on improving the country's economy, as well as making
peace with more countries. McCain however, is pretty old but has a lot
of experience. Yet he doesn't even have an email address, which proves
he might not be the most "modern" choice. His vice-president candidate
has really helped him improve his campaign, although I completely lost
trust in her after learning she was a dedicated hunter.
Many people don't really care about the U.S.Elections since they're not American. Yet what happens in the United States affects what happens here or anywhere else. (Continued on page 37)

(Continued from page 44)
For example, if the new President declared war with Russia, many countries would be involved. Or something as simple as the economy; if your parents get paid in U.S. dollars or you like buying things cheaper in the states, the new president should be important to you. We still don't know who will be the new leader of the U.S.A., but we'll soon find out. For now, keep reading The Papercut to find out whats next!!!

ADVICE FROM DOLCE & GABANNA
Dear D&G,
I have this crush; he is SO cute and sweet. The problem is that he doesn’t like me! I really want this to work with the dance coming up and everything. How do I get him to like me? Please Help!
From, Desperate 911
Dear Desperate911,
It sounds like you really like this guy! Remember always be yourself! Don’t try to be someone you’re not, just to get his attention. Try bit by bit to talk to him, ask him about his interests; also try to ask if he is doing anything on the weekend, maybe some of his friends and your friends can watch a movie. If it doesn’t feel like he likes you after this, try to hang out with him, even as just as his friend! The more you know about him, the better you know how to act around him, so it doesn’t get embarrassing.
Good Luck! – “Dolce & Gabanna”
Hi “Dolce & Gabanna”,
I am having trouble with this one teacher, she absolutely HATES me!
Every time I go into her classroom, I get goose bumps! She constantly
picks on me! And I get really bad grades from her. It’s not that I
don’t turn in my HW, I just blank every time she asks me something in
class, also I don’t get the HW! And I get SO nervous! How do I get good
grades from her?
Regards, Weakness_4_Teachers
Dear Weakness_4_Teachers,
Maybe there is a reason she picks on you! I don’t thinks she means to
hurt you! You should maybe have a little talk with her explaining that
you are scared of her class, and if she would mind stop picking on you!
Tutoring is also another option, to help you do better in this
teacher’s class. To get good grades, you should be organized, get help
from your parents or tutor for the homework, and answer as many
questions as you can. I can’t control your goose bumps, but I don’t
think you should be so scared if you have that conversation with your
teacher. Always happy to help, D&G
Q: Dear D&G
I have a
real problem. I'm in 6th grade and I have a social problems. I'd really
like to tell to peer helpers, but all of them are mean to me and I feel
like a loser.
A: Dear Social Problem
I am surprised with this situation. You should inform a teacher or an adult. Your friends, D&G
Dear D&G
my girlfriend is not 100% committed to our relationship and she gets mad at me when i mention it to her. What should i do?
A: Dear Friend,
You should take time to talk to her and figure out how she really feels about you. Your friends, D&G
Q:Dear D&G
i got a very
mean note in my locker that said I was fat and ugly, I don't know who
it is but it was really hurtful. What should i do?
A: Dear Mean Note
just try to ignore the notes, if they don't stop then talk to an adult about it.
y still laugh at you. they are not meant to be your friends.

Aries
CAUTION! If you read this horoscope, you may have a lot of problems this week! Be careful what you are doing! So, this week you will make some bad choices. One of the bad choices may be showing this horoscope to them. Now, you should pretend like you didn't read that horoscope and you have to tell every single person in your class that The PaperCut is the best newspaper of all and they should read it, if you don't want to be depressed from all the problems that you have!
Gemini
23.
23. 23. 23 is the worst number for this week. Remember: don't ever
choose 23 as anything. For example: you can't have 23 pencils. You
can't be 23rd on the list. It's the bad luck. Also there will happen
one thing that will be very surprising for you. I won't tell you if
it's a good or bad thing because it depends just and only on you. Good
luck!
Cancer
That will be a great time to say, what you have on your mind. Your friends have a really good humor and they will help you with any problem. About the dance: You shouldn’t care about how you dress and with who you are going there with. You are supposed to just and only have fun there with all your friends. Give your friends the opportunity to make you happy and leave your problems in the past. Goal for the week: leave the past and don’t bring it to the present!
Libra
All your worries will vanish because of all the friends you have around. Your crush might be feeling the same way about you so don’t be shy and him/her to the dance. Your next school project grade will be a B+ so be happy about that. You will get a great gift soon but I cant tell you what it will be because it’s a surprise!!!!!
Sagittarius
Life
is looking very clear for you. you will be having a great week. You may
be having doubts about your friends but that doesn't matter as long as
your friends like you for the person you are. You will also have some
argument with your siblings and parent but that shouldn't be a problem
because they are your family and they love you.
Capricorn
You
probably can't wait until weekend starts. You are going to go for a
sleepover or you will do anything fun, BUT be careful because if you
won't treat people nicely and you won't
have a happy smile on your face
Aquarius
You will have a good sports season. People may be acting mean to you but that doesn’t mean anything because next month is when you will be very, very lucky next month. You will also have a very relaxed weekend with very little homework. Sometimes you might be feeling low about yourself but that shouldn’t put you down.
Pisces
Your friends are treating you very well because of your great personality. Remember that even though you may be thinking that your the happiest person ever that could always change in the matter of seconds. Out of what I know you may be the one struggling in a week because of all the lies you told and the people you hurt so keep your eyes open and be sure that something may happen and that somthing is something bad.
