Clean Up Day
May 18th, 1PM-5PM
Bring a smiling face, put on some work clothes and join us for some spring cleaning!
We want to come together to spruce up the temple, clean out the corners and give the synagogue the love and attention it deserves.
We need painters, sweepers, scrubbers and landscapers. This is a great way to be meet other community members. Your help is always appreciated.
This is the only temple in Fairbanks and we want to do our best to keep it looking tip top. It is very easy to forget how much some elbow grease and a gallon of paint can improve the look and feel of a building.
We need all of you. We look forward to seeing everyone there!!

Yom Ha'atzmaut
May 6th, 2014
Many Jewish Americans in the United States remember Israel’s Independence Day, also known as Yom Ha’Atzmaut (or Yom HaAtzmaut). Celebrations are annually held on or around the fifth day of the month of Iyar, according to the Jewish calendar.
Israeli flags are often visible at events that celebrate Yom Ha'Atzmaut.
Background
Many Jewish Americans celebrate Israel’s independence on Yom Ha’Atzmaut. It commemorates when David Ben-Gurion, who was Israel’s first prime minister, publicly read the Israel’s Declaration of Independence on May 14, 1948. According to the Jewish calendar, this was the fifth day of Iyar, the eighth month of the civil year, in the year 5708.
According to the Jewish calendar, the fifth day of the month of Iyar cannot fall on a Sunday. If this date falls on a Friday or Saturday, Yom Ha'Atzmaut is observed on the third or fourth day of the month. If the date falls on a Monday, it is observed on the sixth day of Iyar. This is so that the festivities do not fall just before, on, or just after the Sabbath.
Symbols
The most prominent symbol seen at events that celebrate Yom Ha’Atzmaut is Israel’s flag. This is a white rectangle in the ratio 11:8 with two horizontal blue stripes, one at the top and one at the bottom. A regular hexagram, known as the Star of David, or Megan David, is depicted in blue between the stripes
What do people do?
Many Jewish organizations, including community centers, university student groups, and some schools, organize events to celebrate Yom Ha’Atzmaut. Many of these events are open to the general public and include entertainment such as:
Kosher pizza dinners., Singing, music and dance games or performances, Face painting, Flag making activities, Barbecues.

2 cans of canned chickpea (Garbanzo beans)
1/2 cup of water
3 tablespoons of sesame Tahini
5 tablespoons of lemon juice
A pinch of cumin
1 teaspoon of minced garlic (or garlic powder)
1 teaspoon of salt
1 and 1/2 tablespoon of olive oil
- In a small pot, cook the beans, garlic, cumin, and half the salt, and a cup of water. Bring to boiling and then let it simmer for at least 30 minutes. The goal is to make the beans very soft. When the beans are fully cooked, drain the water.
- Work the Tahini into a dip by slowly adding the oil, half a cup of water, and the lemon juice into the Sesame Tahini. Add the other half of the salt.
- Grind the beans and the Tahini dip together in a blender until you get a smooth paste.
Hummus is served as a dip on a small plate with a little olive oil and paprika as garnish.
2 medium eggplants
1 minced clove of garlic
1 tablespoon of lemon juice
1/2 cup Sesame Tahini
3/4 teaspoon salt
- Grill the eggplant on both sides in the oven on high heat for about 30 minutes until soft.
- Drain from the juices, peal and remove the pulp (the seeds).
- Put in a blender or food processor.
- Add the garlic, lemon juice, salt and Tahini. Blend all.

Blue & white construction paper or blue colored magazine ads
Stick
Glue
Scissors
- Cut small pieces of different shades of blue construction paper or different blue colored magazine ads (check that the ads are child-friendly).
- On a rectangle white construction paper, glue the little blue pieces in the shape of two horizontal lines near the top and bottom of the page.
- Glue the rest of the blue pieces of paper in a shape of a Star of David in the middle of the white construction paper to make the flag of Israel.
- Glue the paper flag onto the stick.
2 cottage cheese containers, or any similar size containers
20 feet (6 meters) string
Scissors
- Poke a small hole in the middle of the bottom of the containers.
- String the string through the holes and tie a knot inside each of the containers so the string cannot be pulled out.
- One person talks inside the container and the other put the other container on his/her ear. The string should be pulled tight so the sound waves can travel efficiently.
