Sounder is a great book about a boy and his dog. In this story the protaganist (the boy) under goes a great amount of change and develoupes into a strong well rounded man. Sounder is a loyal hunting dog that would do anything to please his master.  Sounder is an emotional book that makes you think about life and how you can better yours today.

Characters

The Boy: A dynamic character who undergoes a lot of change and has to deal with his father going to jail and his dog getting shot. By the end of the book he becomes a well rounded man.

 

Sounder:  a static character who is loyal to his master and will do anything to please him. When two police men come to arrest the boys father sounder quickly objects and chases after the police men.

The Father: is a well rounded person and is one of the boys role models. He stays the same throughout the story and is seen very little in the story when he is jail. But he plays a big role in the boys life.

 

The Teacher: takes over the fathers spot as a role model in the boys life. He doesn't change through out the story but he is very helpful in the change from the boy becoming a man.

Background

 

Exposition: the boy finds a dog and convinces his father to let him keep it they name it sounder. The dog is a great hunting dog and the father goes hunting often.

 

Rising Action: the father needs food for his family so he steels a pig from the farm. The farm owner does not like this and has the father thrown in jail. The the police men are arresting the father sounder doesn't like this and chases after his master. One of the policemen shots sounder and he is extremely injured. The dog almost dies but pulls through. On the fathers birthday the boys mother gives the boy a cake to give to his father. When he arrives at the jail and the security guards don't give him much respect. The end up destroying the cake. Later in the story the boy meets a teacher who is very nice and caring towards him. The boy makes the decision to live with the teacher so he can learn and have a better life.

 

Climax: the boys father comes home injured and in bad condition.

 

 

Falling action: the boys father goes out hunting with sounder and is no were to be found.

resolution: both Sounder and the father die.
