Theme:
The things the soldiers carried are both physical and emotional. Guilt, shame, terror, grief, and longing are the stresses of the emotional burdens. Almost every soldier carries something to remind them of a girlfriend or a past love. Dobbins carries a pair of pantyhose, while Cross carries only a picture. "Whenever he looked at the photographs, he thought of new things he should have done." Jimmy Cross also carries a compass and maps because he is responsible for the company. The men who survived carry the most guilt and confusion as to why they lived and others did not.

Recommendations:
I liked the book a lot, but it was a bit confusing at parts. The story was not in logical order so you had to think about what happened at what time. So for my recommendation i would say its a definate read, but a bad idea for a project due to the story line.
